A frozen oceanic crystal mush

چکیده
The processes driving the evolution of crystal mushes are often documented in complex systems where crystallization, assimilation, magma replenishment and mixing occur concurrently generally overprinted by compaction deformation. Documenting characteristics an undisturbed mush is thus upmost importance; it highlights initial conditions with which proceed. We here present structure composition oceanic through detailed petro-structural chemical study metre-scale intrusions from Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Textures, bulk-rock mineral compositions indicate closed-system crystallization primitive melts, dissolution–precipitation reactions subsequent These frozen record simplest possible small-scale can be used as a baseline to pinpoint impact on systems. Any divergence this reference results occurring concomitantly progressive closure magmatic system.

Solid-mush interface conditions for mushy layers
A subtle issue in the study of mushy zones which form during the solidification of binary alloys is that there are two distinct types of solid-mush interfaces which may occur. One of these is a eutectic front and the other is a front which separates the mushy layer and, assuming complete solute rejection, a layer of a pure solid. For semi-infinite domain configurations that admit similarity sol...
متن کاملLocalized Rejuvenation of a Crystal Mush Recorded in Zircon Temporal and Compositional Variation at the Lassen Volcanic Center, Northern California
Zircon ages and trace element compositions from recent silicic eruptions in the Lassen Volcanic Center (LVC) allow for an evaluation of the timing and conditions of rejuvenation (reheating and mobilization of crystals) within the LVC magmatic system. The LVC is the southernmost active Cascade volcano and, prior to the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, was the site of the only eruption in the C...

متن کاملTowards long-wavelength protein crystallography: keeping a protein crystal frozen in vacuum
There is growing interest to explore the long-wavelength X-ray domain for macromolecular crystallography (MX) experiments but there are a number of practical issues that make these experiments difficult to perform. In this article we study several aspects related to cooling a protein crystal in a vacuum environment. We investigated thermal contact conductance (TCC) of copper-copper joints and d...

SUMMER 2008 BETA 31 Trauma : “I can’t remember anything after the first few words she said: ‘I’m sorry to tell you that your test results came back positive.’ After that, it was all just a blur of sounds and images—the traffic outside, my heart beating, the look on her face. Everything was moving in slow motion. I just kept hearing those five words echoing in my head: ‘Your test came back posit...
